When I was a girl my parents furnished our home with exotic furniture picked up for a song at public auctions. One piece fired my imagination – a large mahogany wardrobe, so large the basement window had to be removed to fit it into our suburban home, so exotic for a house equipped with plenty of closet space.
For the most part it inhabited the basement, a behemoth, largely ignored, until C.S. Lewis entered my life.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was the first of Lewis’ six-part epic story describing a world where animals speak, a White Witch controls the weather and Turkish Delight is to be avoided if you value your immortal soul. The world is Narnia and its gate, a wardrobe. Imagine an eight-year-old’s excitement to read the story in a basement inhabited by a potential portal? I consumed all the books, re-read them many times, not always with my children, and confess to still owning a box set today.
Summer is closing fast. Back to school sales abound. Despite the humidity, there is a coolness at night and gardens are telling us they are approaching their end of day. Take a moment this weekend. Borrow a child if you need to, but come see how imagination comes to life on Theatre Orangeville’s stage and a wardrobe once again is a catalyst for hope, adventure and pure magic.
