Accessibility

At Theatre Orangeville, accessibility is one of our core values. We want everyone in our community to be able to share in the experience of live theatre.

We aim to make every aspect of your theatrical experience accessible, from buying tickets to the show itself. If you have any questions, or suggestions about how we can improve your or another individual’s experience, please contact us.

Most of our productions are held at the Opera House. However, we occasionally produce shows at different venues, which may have different levels of accessibility.

You can check which venue your show is at on this website (on the applicable show page) or by calling the Box Office.

For guests with restricted mobility

If your show is at the Opera House, 36 of our 273 seats are removable. When booking, please let us know if you'd like a seat removed to accommodate your needs.

Guests are welcome to bring their own personal assistive devices; devices such as walkers can be stored safely in the lobby during the performance.

For guests who prefer a relaxed environment

Once during every production we offer a relaxed performance. All are welcome to attend, however they are intended to eliminate or minimize any environmental barriers that may prevent someone from attending the theatre.

During relaxed performances, Theatre Orangeville raises the house lights, opens the doors and lowers the sound levels for anyone who may find the theatre environment challenging for any reason. Relaxed performance dates are noted anywhere performances are listed.

The main goal of a relaxed performance is to “relax” the experience through small changes to the audience experience, environment, and performance.

The Experience

Changes to the overall experience may include:

  • Patrons who feel overwhelmed during the performance are welcome to come and go from the performance or walk about the theatre
  • Personal assistive devices such as iPads, or other illuminated tablets are permitted (although we do ask they are silenced for the comfort of other guests when possible)
  • Babes in arms are welcome to attend

The Environment

  • House lighting will be raised slightly
  • The lobby doors will be opened early to all for a more calm, casual entry and exit to the theatre

The Performance

Changes to the performance may include:

  • Adjustment to sound levels or demonstration and explanation of any loud noises or effects
  • Actors speaking to the audience before the performance to explain scenes or what they can expect
  • Jarring or startling stage lighting, such as strobe effects, may be dimmed or eliminated

For guests with support persons

We welcome support persons who provide services or assistance with communication, mobility, personal care, medical needs, or access to our facilities.

Support persons will be given a complimentary ticket if any patrons who have purchased a ticket require personal assistance to be able to attend a performance.

For guests who are deaf, deafened, or hard of hearing

The Opera House is equipped with an assistive hearing system. Headsets are available to borrow, free of charge, and may be requested from the House Manager upon arrival to the space.

For guests with service animals

Designated service animals are welcome. Please let us know at time of booking so we can ensure necessary space is blocked off so your dog can sit comfortably in the space.
